Formation Flying Endorsement in Perth

The Formation Flying Endorsement is designed for pilots who want to take their flying to the next level.

Throughout the course, you will learn how to safely operate in close proximity to another aircraft, maintain position, complete formation manoeuvres, manage break-offs and re-joins, and communicate effectively as part of a formation.

The course is practical, engaging and focused on building confidence progressively. Each flight is carefully briefed before departure and debriefed after landing, giving you a clear understanding of what went well, what can be improved and how to continue developing as a formation pilot.

During the course, you will develop the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate as part of a formation, including:

• Formation planning and briefings
• Lead and wingman responsibilities
• Station keeping
• Echelon and line astern formation positions
• Position changes
• Formation turns
• Formation circuits
• Break-offs and re-joins
• Radio calls and communication
• Visual lookout and situational awareness
• Emergency procedures
• Threat and error management during formation operations

The flying component is typically completed in approximately 5 hours, depending on pilot experience, aircraft availability, weather and competency progression.

Our Formation Instructor rate is $200 per hour for ground briefings and flying.

Aircraft hire is not included. Trainees are required to arrange a suitable aircraft for the flying component of the course. We can point you in the right direction for a suitable aircraft - contact us.

Formation training also requires coordination with another suitable aircraft and qualified pilot. This will be discussed during the booking process.

To complete the Formation Flying Endorsement, pilots should hold:

• A CASA pilot licence, RPL or higher
• A current flight review
• A current medical certificate appropriate to the licence and aircraft being used
• Suitable aircraft recency and handling confidence
